What is the definition of Health?
According to Dorland's Medical Dictionary, the definition of health is "a state of optimal physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity."
Are symptoms good or bad?
Symptoms are the body's way of telling you that you have a problem. In many cases, symptoms are good. It is the body trying to heal itself. For instance, a fever is the body trying to fight infection. If you have a low grade fever (i.e. 99 degrees), you may have a viral infection, whereas a high grade fever (102 degrees and above) usually indicates a bacterial infection. Your body knows that a low grade fever will usually kill off a viral infection and that a bacterial infection generally requires a higher fever. Therefore, taking aspirin or fever-reducing medication is probably NOT a good idea since reducing your fever could very well mean that you'll be sick longer.
Vomiting, diarrhea and coughing are other examples of the body trying to heal itself. In these instances, the body is trying to eliminate the toxin. If you are vomiting or have "the runs", it is important that you replace the fluids by drinking a lot of water, but taking something to stop the vomiting or runs within the first 24 hours could allow the bug to thrive. Many cough syrups have alcohol, which may give you other problems, so therefore, allowing the cough to eliminate the "bug" is usually a good idea.
Chest pain could be considered a good symptom in that the body told you that there was a problem, but in that instance, you should get to the hospital as quickly as possible as you might be experiencing a heart attack.
Pain is generally a good symptom. It is the way the body tells you that you have a problem. Many people ignore the pain as they think it will just go away. Or, they take an analgesic such as Tylenol or Advil. Analgesics cover up the symptom like a Band-Aid, they don't fix the problem. And, many times, taking an analgesic can make the problem worse as it lulls people into a false sense of security. They think that if they can't feel the pain, then they are OK and go about doing their regular activities. Pain tells us what we can and cannot do. Cutting off the pain signal may cause us to aggravate the problem.
Whether you have "good" symptoms or "bad" symptoms, having a good relationship with a natural health provider is a good idea. It's important to know the difference between a medical emergency and you body's natural healing process.
What do you mean by the body healing itself?
The body has an inborn intelligence, called innate, which allows the body to heal itself. Innate (or universal) intelligence is in all living matter. What allows the body to heat a gash to your skin? Innate intelligence. It is not in anything dead, that is why if you cut a piece of steak, it wouldn't patch itself up.
The same thing is true when you get a cold or fever. The body is trying to heal itself. Human beings are born with a natural pharmacy in their body. We produce the same chemicals that drugs are derived from. But, when you allow the body to produce them itself, rather than taking a pill, you allow the immune system to strengthen. It is equivalent to someone else doing exercises for you, or you physically going to the gym and working out. It may not be easy in the beginning, you may have to feel soreness from using new muscles (or feel achy from the fever), but over time, you will become stronger and find that you may not even get flu's or colds, even though others' around you may be sick.
What is all the fuss about antibiotics these days?
Taking an antibiotic when you have a viral infection will not help that infection at all. Antibiotics are designed to kill bacterial infections. Different types of antibiotics kill different strains of bacterial infections. If you have a bacterial infection that requires an antibiotic, it is important to have a culture taken to determine the correct antibiotic for your specific bacteria. Otherwise, the bacteria could mutate and become stronger, and not react to an antibiotic. Currently, scientists are concerned about the increasingly stronger strains of bacterial infections and not having strong enough antibiotics. This is mostly due to the over prescribing of antibiotics. Recent research shows that antibiotics for ear infections in children are ineffective and could actually make ear infections happen more frequently. Not to mention the other problems caused by giving children antibiotics.
How can the nervous system affect my health?
The nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. It is connected to every organ, tissue and cell in your entire body. When you feel hot or cold, feel a feather running across your arm, feel someone pinching your cheek, it is the nervous system working. When you take a drink, it is the nervous system that allows you to move your arm up and down and gives you the ability to taste what you are drinking. The organs could not function without the nervous system.
The nervous system is controlled by the brain. The brain tells your nerves how to function. The brain communicates with the spinal nerves through the spinal cord. The nerves pass through the vertebra, or spinal bones, through a little hole. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for the function of the organs. This system communicates by nerves that run on top of the spinal column and join with nerves that go to the various organs and glands. If the nerves are interfered with in any way, (i.e. subluxation muscle spasm on nerve or pinching of nerv), the organ, tissue or cell will have a decreased function. The lack of function may cause no symptoms at all, or you may experience a symptom such as numbness, tingling, or pain. When the nervous system is interfered with it reduces the body's natural healing abilities.
Removing the interference to the nervous system is the job of the Chiropractor. By removing this blockage, not only does the pain usually subside, but many people also noticed a change in the way their organs are functioning. Reports of deceased headaches, decreased menstrual cramps, elimination of stomach pain or irritable bowel syndrome, decreased allergies or sinus headaches, elimination of asthma-symptoms are all common observations by chiropractic patients. The procedure used to remove the nerve interference is called an adjustment.
